August 14, 2020 - Each year, over 160 students at UNMGallup receive crucial student support services through the TRIO Program, which was implemented on campus 20 years ago in 2000. This month, the program was notified that it has received Congressional funding through the Department of Higher Education to continue programs that motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.

As outlined in the award notification letter, the purpose of national Student Support Services programs is to provide academic and other support services to low-income, first-generation, or disabled college students to increase retention and graduation rates, facilitate the transfer from two-year to four-year colleges, and foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of these students with various academic needs while on the UNMGallup campus.

Service provided by UNMGallup’s TRIO/SSS program include academic, financial, personal, and career advisement; peer mentors; assistance with financial aid; various workshops; cultural enrichment activities; and the summer bridge program called Lobo Academy—to name just a few.

“We are so grateful for this renewed, five-year funding of these ever-important student services at our university,” says Jayme McMahon, Director of Student Affairs. “Especially in this pandemic environment, we are going to need to support student learning and success even more, and this helps us continue our two-decades of service to our student community at UNMGallup.”

For the start of the fall semester beginning on Monday, August 17, all TRIO offices will be closed with all personnel conducting mentoring and other activities remotely. Students may access these services on the UNMGallup TRIO/SSS webpage at www.gallup.unm.edu/trio.
