About the Artist
Born in North Dakota on the Standing Rock Reservation, artist Cannupa Hanska Luger comes from Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, Austrian, and Norwegian descent. Luger's unique, ceramic-centric, but ultimately multidisciplinary work tells provocative stories of complex Indigenous identities coming up against 21st Century imperatives, mediation, and destructivity. Luger creates socially conscious work that hybridizes his identity as an American Indian in tandem with global issues. Using his art as a catalyst, he invites the public to challenge expectations and misinterpretations imposed upon Indigenous peoples by historical and contemporary colonial social structures.

UNMGallup receives Upward Bound grant
UNMGALLUP NEWS RELEASE
FOR RELEASE: May 30, 2017
The Office of Senator Tom Udall announced on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, that the University of New Mexico-Gallup Campus has been awarded a U.S. Department of Education Upward Bound grant which will be effective September 1, 2017. The goal of Upward Bound Projects is to increase rates of high school graduation and subsequent enrollment in and graduation from post-secondary institutions. Qualifying participants include students from low-income families or those from families in which neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree.
Upward Bound projects provide academic support and instruction to eligible high school students in a wide range of academic subjects. Assistance is offered through tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment programs and services designed to improve financial and economic literacy. Services such as weekly visits to target schools, Saturday Academy sessions, and summer programming are all part of the Upward Bound model. Jayme McMahon, Director of Student Affairs at UNMGallup, was instrumental in the preparation of the grant proposal and will serve as the project’s Principal Investigator. McMahon noted, “Upward Bound programs are designed for students who are typically underrepresented in higher education such as those who are first-generation college students, students who use English as a second language, students with disabilities, students in foster care or the many others who may never have considered college as a possibility.”
The grant has been awarded at an amount of $257,500.00 for the first year is expected to be awarded for five years for a total award amount of $1,287,500.00.
According to McMahon, “This grant offers us a great opportunity to provide fundamental support for high school participants in their preparation for college while exposing them to the many options they have when it comes to post-secondary education. Many students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, do not think they can be successful in college when in fact they just need some targeted help in learning how to navigate the higher education experience. Nationally, the outcomes achieved by Upward Bound have shown that this extra support may be all students need to reach academic goals they didn’t even know were possible.”

UNMGallup Students Attend The Yuma Symposium
UNMGALLUP NEWS RELEASE
FOR RELEASE: April 4, 2017
By Marilee Petranovich
Gallup, New Mexico – UNMGallup Instructor Kristi Wilson and Associate Professor John Zimmerman recently accompanied six of their students to the 2017 Yuma Art Symposium in Yuma, Arizona. The Symposium is an annual event that recognizes both internationally known and emerging artists through a series of lectures, demonstrations and slide presentations. The UNMGallup students attending were also able to exhibit personal art pieces during the Student Show.
Mary Roan, a student in Wilson’s Small Metals Construction class found the field trip to be a positive addition to her academic coursework. “This was a very educational experience. The Yuma Art Symposium has further opened my mind’s eye to endless possibilities in the world of art and how it is therapeutic and necessary in our everyday lives whether we are creators of art or not.”
The students were able to choose from a variety of workshops and presentations including photos, metals, wood and mixed media. Students were actively involved in the Symposium and many had the opportunity to assist presenters, help in the catering of meals, and act as guides for other students.
Sharmayne Arviso was inspired by exposure to different artists. “It is basically about giving other artists a brighter understanding to be more creative with their own ideas. To see my work and my fellow classmates’ work displayed at the Symposium was one of the best things. At the end of the day, hearing people give feedback about your work is something that can help you with your work.”
Monty Thompson was grateful for the opportunity to attend the Symposium. “From the small scale metal art, ceramics, drawings, paintings, wood art, and the printmaking to the beautiful photography. They were all amazing. A trip like none other.” The ability to showcase their artwork was an added benefit noted by all the students. Cobin Bo Willie was happy to have the chance to publicly display one of his designs. “Even now to feel that my art is on the same caliber as many there was assurance for my confidence in my own art. This was the first time a piece of my art was ever shown in any gallery.”

UNMGallup’s History Based on Community Support
UNMGALLUP NEWS RELEASE
FOR RELEASE: February 6, 2017
Since we first started offering classes in 1968, UNMGallup’s mission has always been to serve the educational and professional needs of our area. Our first classes were held at the old Gallup High School building where we originally served 128 students. Today we have grown to serve approximately 2400 students on a campus that sprawls across 87 acres. We have grown from a campus of one building to a college of 12 buildings. Our first building, Lions Hall, was a donation given by the local Lions Club to illustrate the importance the community placed on bringing higher education to the citizens of the area.
From our early beginnings, our growth and our future have always been dependent on the support of the greater Gallup/McKinley County population. When the early leaders of our community decided there was a need for a ÒÁÈ˾þà branch campus to serve local students, they put into motion a history of educational achievements that has allowed tens of thousands of students to pass through our doors on their way to pursuing their ambitions.
With the support of our community we have been able to grow both enrollment and programs as a means of preparing students to enter directly into the workforce or go on for further education. We continue to emphasize the “community” in community college by making a difference in the lives of our students and allowing them to impact the local job market and improve the economic outlook for themselves and their families.
Dreams do come true at UNMGallup and we encourage voters to allow us to keep changing and improving student lives in our area by approving the continuation of the UNMGallup mill levy on February 7th. Renewal of the existing mill levy will support campus operations and allow UNMGallup to promote the importance of community-focused, regionally specific and culturally vibrant educational opportunities. Thank you for your support.

Artist’s Exhibition
UNMGALLUP NEWS RELEASE
FOR RELEASE: February 9, 2017
Isadora Stowe "In Theory" is on display in the Ingham Chapman Gallery until February 22nd. Also on Wednesday February 22nd, Isadora will be presenting a lecture from 5:30-6:30 in the Calvin Hall Auditorium #248.
Immediately following the lecture we will be having a closing reception for her exhibition in the Ingham Chapman Gallery with light refreshments. All events are free and open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. Here is a description of the artist and her work.
Isadora Stowe, BFA, MFA exhibits her series of work “In Theory”, that incorporates mixed media screen-printing with wood drawing silhouettes. January 17th-Feburary 22, 2017, Closing Reception and Artist Talk, Wed., February 22, at 5:30 pm.
Stowe grew up in the southwest border region, living and working in New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. She credits these experiences with a heightened awareness of geographical and political boundaries; and a fascination with the exploration of identity of self in her work. The artwork on exhibit reflects Stowe’s strong interest in visual narratives, created out of symbolic code, or personal syntax, that explore memory as it relates to the construction, negotiation and interpretation of the sense of self.
Her exhibition “In Theory” is an installation where symbolic codes are repeated in juxtapositions that reinterpret and transcend their meanings. These narrative codes, such as a house with oversized succulents spouting from the roof, are repeated through screen prints on large circles and triangles. In addition silhouettes of the symbols are placed in alternating formations moving through and connecting in combinations on the gallery walls.
Stowe earned her BFA in Painting with a double major in Cultural Anthropology, minor in Native American Studies and a MFA in Painting and Drawing from New Mexico State University. She exhibits her work nationally and is represented in many collections across the country and in Mexico. She maintains a studio in New Mexico and is the full time art faculty at the Northwest Campus of El Paso Community College in Texas. Stowe has been the recipient of several grants, scholarships and awards for her work, including an award for excellence from the New Mexico Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
